Post Race Treats
Runners have this funny saying “I run so I can eat”. I say funny because once you become a goal oriented runner, whether it is simply running X days/week or Y miles/week or training for performance, most runners put in an effort to fuel themselves to improve their performance.
So while we try to be conscious of what we eat throughout the week, a post race option seems to be off limits. After burning anywhere from 1000-1500 calories for a half marathon, I want to #EatAllTheFood !!! (Not really though, I learnt my lesson after my 20 miler when I spent the rest of the day in bed between bouts of throwing up. No more Indian buffets for this Indian girl after long runs!).
While beer seems to be a popular choice post-race, as a non-drinker I go in for more conservative choices.
I *know* that a protein smoothie ought to be my first choice for a post-run treat. And the way I make it, it really is a treat. My secret ingredient is pineapple and GINGER! Ginger gives a normal fruit smoothie a spicy tang and also has anti-inflammatory properties. The only unfortunate thing about home made smoothies is that it looses its airy consistency if carried in a bottle. I carry it with me anyway to drink after my normal workouts, but not post-race.
If I could be sponsored by Chocolate milk, that’d be one of the happiest season ever for me! I always have a carton in my run and bike and swim bags (make that 3 cartons!). After my marathon at RnR New Orleans, I downed 3 cold chocolate milks, one after the other without a breather in between! Luckily, I was amongst the last few runners coming in and they had plenty left. While one chocolate milk might be considered as refueling, THREE is definitely categorized as post race treats.
But if I could really really really have whatever I wanted post-race, my choice hands down would be an ICE CREAM. An awesome layered icecream sundae with flavors of ice cream and toppings and ….
I did get a margarita at the Mexico Pavilion at Mile 26 of the Dopey Marathon. But after the weird churning I had in my stomach a couple of hours later, it might be a one time thing; reserved exclusively for Disney marathons.
And just once, I indulged in a dessert dinner party. At the Wishes Dessert Party in Tomorrowland Terrace after the Princess Half Marathon. We watched Tinkerbell fly over our heads to start of the fireworks while enjoying a collection of marvelous desserts. The half marathon in the morning no way compensated for the dessert calories!
What is your favorite post-race treat?
If you are an ice cream person, what is your favorite ice cream of them all? Have you been to the Wishes Dessert Party? What did you think of it?
