Meeting Bill Rodgers at Jeff Galloway 13.1 Expo
I met Bill Rodgers 5 years ago in October at his running store while on vacation in Boston. I was hanging around Faneuil Hill Marketplace with my then 3yo and 10month old when I saw the running store. Mr. FauxTriathlete had his first half marathon coming up shortly and I wanted to get him a gift or motivational something.
I met this nice guy at the store and started talking to him. Soon he asked me if I was running the half marathon too. HE!! NO. I said. I think I added that I;d like to run someday like my husband even though I was not a runner. He asked me why I wasn’t a runner. And I remember being completely incredulous as I said because I can’t run. He asked me why I couldn’t run and our conversation went on for a while before he ended with some encouragement to keep trying and one day I would be a runner.
I did not take his advice and stayed away from all things running until one day I went out for that first training run. And the rest is history.
Here I am today … Meeting him again at the Jeff Galloway 13.1 expo and I proudly told Bill Rodgers that I AM a (faux) runner.
“Bill” Rodgers (born December 23, 1947) is an American runner and former American record holder in the marathon who is best known for his four victories in the Boston Marathon, including three straight 1978-1980 and the New York City Marathon between 1976 and 1980.
