Friday Five: Fictional Characters I want to Train With
When it comes to running with people, some runners are social and love company while some runners closely guard their run time as their alone time. I fall into the former category most of the time, and run alone only when I have a specific training workout to do that I need complete focus on (mainly because I talk when I run and talking messes up pacing). I’ve been very fortunate to have some great running friends and mentors who’ve trained with me these past 5 years.
I’ve also logged plenty of solo running miles, including a few 18-20 mile runs. Just me and myself and my imagination. During those forced solo runs, I imagine that I’m running with some of my favorite people and have imaginary conversations with them. Don’t judge me! After I’ve been running for anything longer than 2.5 – 3hrs, my mind starts wandering and when it wanders, I’d rather direct it to some pleasant avenues.
This post, I’m pondering on five of my favorite fictional character that I’d want for my training buddy. Fictional characters are brought to life by their creators, but it is our imagination that makes us vested in them and making them a part of our life. And don’t we all love a bit of fantasy in our life?
The Doctor
When his very first words on the revival show was “RUN”, what’s not to like?!! The Ninth Doctor, Chris Eccleston, is a multiple London Marathoner. With the companions of the 10th Doctor acknowledging that there is “definitely lots and lots of running”(The Doctor’s Daughter), and with the 11th Doctor’s simple powerful words “Basically, Run”, I’d be certain to get lots and lots of mileage and time on my feet. And the Doctor usually holds hands when he runs, even the grumpy 12th Doctor; and I might not mind that. Although I have to admit that I sort of cringe at my favorite doctor’s (10th Doctor – David Tennant) running form. I think I’ll stick to liking him for his acting and Scottish accent š
The Flash
Who wouldn’t kill to run like the Flash! Sure would make a nice change from my blah pace! To run “with” the Flash though, that would be some serious hustling! But the Flash would be an excellent training buddy while working on my speedwork, having himself undergone some serious speed training under Dr. Harrison Wells (in the TV version).
Sherlock
“Brainy’s the new sexy”, says Irene Adler of Sherlock in the BBC adaptation. Combine that with the constant dashing around Sherlock does, it would indeed be a great time to run with Sherlock. Making deductions and observations along the way about training philosophies and getting insider scoop on the London Marathon course, Sherlock would make me think about my training and say that Running is Elementary! With plenty of great Sherlocks to pick from, mine would be Benedict Cumberbatch – I’m completely mesmerized by his voice!
Mulan
One of my favorite Disney movie characters, Mulan, would be a kickass training buddy. Mulan knows a thing or two about going beyond your comfort zone while chasing dreams. She’d not only whip me into marathon training shape, but also incorporate lots of cross training and turn me into a total bada$$ !! And looks like she likes hill repeats too!
Loki
He’s the bad guy and there are other superheros who do a lot more running than Loki – Captain America or the Black Widow or Sif. Why then Loki as my training buddy? For one, Tom Hiddleston made Loki a much loved villain and like plenty of fan girls, I feel completely in love with Tom Hiddleston’s Loki characterization (and Thor’s Chris Helmsworth).
But also, with Loki’s mind powers, he sure would make me willingly do every single workout and train my heart out. (That would actually be the influence of Tom Hiddleston/Loki’s smoldering eyes on me, I don’t want anything to do with Loki’s actual mind control.)
Do you pretend that you run with people on your solo runs or is that just me?
Which fictional character would you like to be your training buddy – for running or triathlon or general training and why?
